Cottage #27 – The Dive Shack
Cottage #27 – The Dive ShackFOUR CO-WORKERS CAME TOGETHER IN 1931 TO BUILD A CHARMING ONE-BEDROOM
COTTAGE THAT’S NOW AVAILABLE FOR OVERNIGHT RENTAL.
A partnership is at the heart of this 1930s-era structure—Azusa Valley Savings Bank co-workers Elsie Bantley, Margaret Orndorf, Ruth Hepner and Dorothy Sproul pooled their money to build Cottage #27. A prime location perched on the bluff gives the cottage incredible views of the cove. Over the years, it’s remained largely unchanged, with the most recent residents in 1980 making just one significant change: outfitting the kitchen with mahogany cabinetry from a wrecked cabin cruiser that washed ashore.
Today, Cottage #27 is known as The Dive Shack and features a marine theme fitting for its beachside locale. With nautical relics, sloped ceilings and a 1930s appeal, visiting the cottage is like taking a step back in time. It’s maintained much of the original decor, such as net fencing on the front deck, and also boasts a front wall covered in windows to allow in plenty of light. Views of the ocean can be enjoyed from three large porches overlooking the water or sand, and on the back patio, an original tiki bar keeps guests entertained all night long. As one of the cottages available for overnight rental, it’s outfitted with a sofa bed, back bedroom (which includes a full bed) and a sleeping space in the loft.
