Loving Crystal Cove and Caring for It

CRYSTAL COVE, CALIFORNIA – AUGUST 15, 2025

Lately, Crystal Cove has been making waves in the news — from being named “Best California State Beach” to a feature on NBC’s Today Show, we love seeing our little slice of paradise get the recognition it deserves. But with more visitors falling in love with this place, we also face a new challenge: protecting the beauty, wildlife, and history that make Crystal Cove so special.

Crystal Cove isn’t just a beach. It’s part of a State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) — one of California’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) created to give marine life a fighting chance. Here, you can swim, surf, and enjoy the view, but our tidepools are off-limits for collecting. That means no picking up shells, rocks, or tidepool creatures — even “just to look.” These small, fragile animals are already exposed to the elements and need every chance to thrive.

Why does it matter? Because the health of our tidepools depends on you. While rangers and scientists monitor MPAs, the success of these areas ultimately comes down to visitors choosing to protect them. Every person who knows the rules — and follows them — makes a difference.

The 2025 Mid-Year MPA Watch Report from Orange County Coastkeeper revealed a sobering fact: between January and June, Crystal Cove had the highest number of visitors and the highest number of potential MPA violations in Orange County. The most common? Handling or collecting tidepool organisms. Most of these aren’t done out of malice — they’re acts of curiosity. But even a gentle touch can harm delicate sea stars, crabs, and other marine life.

So, how can we all help?

  • Leave only footprints — and keep them away from tidepools.
  • Enjoy with your eyes — resist the urge to touch or take.
  • Be the voice of the cove — kindly share the rules with friends, family, and fellow beachgoers.

The truth is, small actions ripple out. When you choose to leave that perfect shell where it lies, you’re helping keep Crystal Cove’s ecosystems healthy for generations to come.

This summer, let’s be more than visitors. Let’s be the stewards that Crystal Cove deserves — people who love this place enough to protect it. After all, beauty like this is worth keeping wild.
