Monitoring Programs
Crystal Cove Conservancy leads several ecological monitoring programs that collect long-term data on the health of the park’s ecosystems. These efforts provide important information that helps guide resource management and support conservation research while offering opportunities for volunteers to contribute to long-term datasets.
Current and Emerging Monitoring Efforts:
In partnership with California State Parks, The Conservancy monitors butterfly diversity and abundance across backcountry transects and records flowering plant species to study how plant diversity influences butterfly populations. By comparing floral resources and butterfly diversity, The Conservancy gains insight into habitat quality, restoration success, and overall ecosystem health.
In collaboration with Orange Coast College, The Conservancy monitors owl limpet size and abundance at two intertidal sites to assess how human activity influences intertidal communities.
Volunteers document natural material that washes ashore to evaluate nearshore ecosystem health and establish baseline data that can support coastal management.
This proactive program trains volunteers to identify and map invasive plant species before they become established. Developed in partnership with California State Parks, the program helps protect native habitats, support restoration success, and strengthen regional coordination on invasive species management.
In partnership with CA State Parks, this program will track nesting activity, species diversity, and habitat use among raptors and other bird species.
