Starring Crystal CoveTHE POPULAR “BEACHES” COTTAGE AT CRYSTAL COVE REOPENS THIS SUMMER JUST IN TIME FOR CCA’S 2014 SUMMER FILM SERIES.
In its storied past, Crystal Cove was known as a haven for filmmakers. This summer, CCA continues to celebrate the Park’s film history by not only giving visitors a chance to watch two classic movies on the beach, but also explore the newly reopened Beaches Film & Media Center (Cottage #13).
In July and August, CCA invites the community to visit the Park after dark for its special movies on the Beach events, where two classic films are projected onto an oversized inflatable screen right on the sand. “Two of a Kind,” which premiered in 1951 and was filmed here at Crystal Cove, features three con artists who scheme to rob a rich couple out of millions of dollars (Thursday, July 17). The following month, 1953’s “The War of the Worlds” offers a loose adaptation of the H.G. Wells alien invasion novel brought to life on the big screen (Thursday, Aug. 14). Both films begin at 8 p.m. on the beach, so bring your blankets and chairs and enjoy a warm summer night at the Cove.
Before the sun sets, however, be sure to stop by the “Beaches Film & Media Center” to dive into Crystal Cove’s film history. Part of the Phase II restoration and recently reopened to visitors, the Beaches Film & Media Center offers a look back at movies filmed at Crystal Cove. The cottage itself is a testament to the Park’s popularity with filmmakers—it played a starring role in its namesake 1988 film, “Beaches,” starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. The Beaches Film & Media Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on select dates throughout the summer.
