Lazy Days of Summer
Lazy Days of SummerCELEBRATE THE LAST FULL MONTH OF SUMMER DOWN AT CRYSTAL COVE WITH A HANDFUL OF FUN ACTIVITIES THAT WILL BRING YOU BACK TO THE BEACH.
As summer kicks into full gear, beachgoers look for ways to make the most of August before the kids go back to school in the fall. From movies on the beach to activities that take you back in time to the 1920s, ’30s, ’40s and ’50s,CCA has a number of ways you can dig your toes into the sand this summer and keep the fun going all month long.
Beach Bazaar: Taking place Aug. 9-10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the annual Beach Bazaar arts and crafts show features the work of local artisans displaying handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, driftwood items, photography and more, all available for purchase with proceeds benefiting Crystal Cove State Park. Sea glass wrapping, face painting and book signings from local authors will keep people of all ages entertained throughout the weekend.
Art Classes: The arts are celebrated every day at Crystal Cove, with artists regularly capturing the beauty of the shore on canvas, through music or on paper. Regardless of your preferred medium, CCA offers ways to become one with nature through art. Throughout the month, The Great Plein Air Art Experience ($75) offers visitors an opportunity to work with contemporary master painter Margaret Jamison during hands-on workshops held Aug. 7 and 21. Meanwhile, CCA, in partnership with REI, will bring budding photographers to the cove with an introductory outdoor photography class, to be held Aug. 23 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. ($85).
Movies on the Beach: Stop by the beach this August after the sun sets to catch a summertime flick up on the big screen. CCA invites the community for a free showing of a classic movie projected onto an oversized inflatable screen right on the sand. “The War of the Worlds” (1953) will be featured on Thursday, Aug. 14 at 8 p.m. in the Historic District, so bring your beach chairs and blankets for an unforgettable evening.
Community Days: Every Wednesday this summer through Aug. 27, CCA is hosting a fun, interactive Community Days program in the Historic District’s Education Commons. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the public is invited to participate in retro-inspired activities like games of Yahtzee and Old Maid, Lindy Hop dance lessons, barbershop quartet performances and sea glass wrapping. Visitors can also take part in Citizen Science field studies as they help to investigate current science topics like ocean acidification and beach plastics and pollution.
