Participants should already be familiar with the basic operation of their device. \nFollowing the outdoor photography session\, the group will return indoors for a collaborative photo share and discussion. \nMeeting location: Cottage #34\, Crystal Cove State Park Historic District \n\nMeet your guide: \nBob Allen is the author of Wildflowers of Orange County and the Santa Ana Mountains and has taught natural history\, entomology\, botany\, and photography throughout Southern California for decades. \nHe attended Saddleback College in Mission Viejo\, then California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo. In 1982\, Cal Poly awarded him a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental and Systematic Biology. In 2006\, he received his Master of Science degree in Environmental Studies from California State University\, Fullerton. Bob is a Research Associate at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and a Research Associate in Entomology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Conservancy staff will be on hand to spark conversation and connect each activity to our broader work in conservation and K–college education. With new activities introduced throughout the summer\, families are invited to return often\, deepen their connection to the Cove\, and discover how they can help care for this extraordinary place. \nRegistration is not required\, just show up ready to create!

SUMMARY:Cove Talk with Dr. Chris Lowe: Sharks Among Us
DESCRIPTION:Bringing 40 Years of Shark Science to Crystal Cove Conservancy.\n \nFor the past 15 years\, Dr. Chris Lowe and his students at the CSULB Shark Lab have been tracking juvenile white sharks off the Southern California coast. Their findings support the notion that these beaches we typically use for recreation are also a lively and necessary nursery habitat for one of the ocean’s most misunderstood animals. \nIn this Cove Talk\, Dr. Lowe will break down the real science behind what juvenile white sharks are doing near our shores\, what the data shows about actual risk\, and what coastal communities can do to protect both swimmers and a species that needs our help. This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from one of the nation’s leading shark experts. \nCrystal Cove Conservancy President & CEO Kate Wheeler will lead the conversation\, followed by a Q&A session that’s open to all. Then\, stay for the sunset reception! We have a feeling our intimate oceanfront setting will feel more alive after this insightful event. \nSeats are limited\, so register now. \n\nLocation: Special Event Deck at #34 \nParking: Los Trancos Lot across PCH ($15 day-use; free with State Parks annual pass) \n\nMeet Dr. Lowe:\nProfessor Emeritus\, Marine Biology \nDirector of the Shark Lab \nCalifornia State University\, Long Beach \nDr. Lowe has been studying sharks\, rays and bony fishes for over 40 years\, focusing on their behavior\, physiology and ecology. For the last 15 years\, Dr. Lowe and his students have been studying juvenile white sharks off the coast of southern California and in 2018 was funded to form the California Shark Beach Safety Program. Using a wide array of technology\, the Shark Lab team has found that white sharks use southern California beaches as nursery habitat for their young\, placing juvenile white sharks in close proximity to beach goers. State-wide monitoring and student-based projects inform a large education and outreach program designed to reduce risks to both sharks and people. \nWebsite: Shark Lab | California State University Long Beach (csulb.edu) \nFacebook\, Instagram\, YouTube: @csulbsharklab
