DESCRIPTION:Members Only Event: Learn how to access exclusive member events and programs today! \nContinue our Discovery 101 series with a hands-on introduction to tidepooling at Crystal Cove State Park\, led by a Conservancy conservationist. \nThis small group experience begins with a short presentation in the Education Commons\, where we’ll explore the unique ecology of the intertidal zone and learn how to identify some of the species you’re likely to encounter. \nTimed with a very low negative tide\, this program offers a rare opportunity to explore an expansive stretch of exposed intertidal habitat\, revealing the rich diversity of marine life that calls it home. \nFrom there\, we’ll head down to the tidepools just south of the Historic District to put our knowledge into practice. Together\, we’ll search for sea stars\, sea anemones\, hermit crabs\, sea hares\, and other fascinating marine life\, while learning how to observe responsibly and help protect this sensitive ecosystem. \nWhether you’re new to tidepooling or looking to deepen your understanding\, this is an immersive\, hands-on way to connect with the coast through science\, exploration\, and stewardship.

SUMMARY:Gyotaku Printing Workshop with Dwight Hwang
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month\, Dwight Hwang will share the traditional Japanese method of fish printing\, Gyotaku. \nThis is a traditional Japanese printmaking practice that began as a way for fishermen to record their catch\, dating back to the mid-1800s. Traditional Gyotaku consists of swabbing the surface of a fish with calligraphy ink\, called sumi\, made from pine soot and water\, then pressing a sheet of traditional Japanese paper made from mulberry bark\, called washi\, onto the inked surface to produce a print. \nIn celebration of the Japanese American farming families who helped shape the region’s agricultural history\, you will also create prints using fish and vegetables while exploring connections between art\, culture\, and Crystal Cove’s coastal history. \n \nParking is available in the Los Trancos Parking Lot off Pacific Coast Highway.
